💃 performing arts
Norte Maar remains committed to the performing arts and the creation of new dance providing a forum for experimentation and big risks. Dance, music, literature, film, science, sculpture, design and more culminate in a Norte Maar performance event. Since its founding in 2004, Norte Maar has produced nine major collaborative ballets.
Counterpointe is Norte Maar’s longest running performance production exclusively featuring collaborations between female dance makers and visual artists.
🖍️ community programs
Free Art Days for Kids is a free program that invites local professional artists, musicians, dancers, craft makers, architects, etc, to teach and explore books and the arts with the children and families in our neighborhood. Led by artist Paula Pino, sessions are held every Saturday 10-11am at the Arlington Public Library (during the Stay-At-Home orders, the program is being held on the Zoom platform). Parents are invited to attend with their children ages 5-15, to make a different art project each week. Please fill out the contact form to get notified of the next session. and receive a Zoom invitation.
Imagined as a free-flowing environment for art-making and imagination, this program was originally designed and created in 2009 in association with Bushwick Impact, a family and neighborhood support organization, as an effort to improve conditions for children and families in challenging city neighborhoods, and bring hands on experience in making and creating, reading and writing. Past artist participants have included Seth Caplan, Hermine Ford, Tamara Gonzales, Austin Thomas, and Audra Wolowiec, among others.
Free Art for Kids is a program of Norte Maar produced in partnership with the Arlington Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Free Kids' Art fosters relationships with the children, parents, families of our community of Cypress Hills, Brooklyn.
Art for Kids is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. Past support includes funding from the 2012 JPMorgan Chase Regrant Program, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).
🏺 visual art
The visual arts have always been at the core of Norte Maar’s programming. As a leader in the Bushwick art scene, we presented a minimum of six exhibitions each year, from one-person or group shows, spontaneous salons, pop-up installations and museum shows that bridge gaps left in history. Since moving to our Cypress Hills location, we have presented 7 two-person exhibitions in the Norte Maar gallery.
Current exhibitions include the annual CounterPointe group show installed in the lobby of The Mark O’Donnell Theater at the Actors Fund Arts Center in Brooklyn.
